Course TitleOral Manifestations of Select Systemic DiseasesDr. Joshua SegalIntroduction:Dr. Joshua Segal is the Program Director of the oral and maxillofacial surgery program at Hofstra/Northwell Health.  He obtained his B.A. in biology from Northwestern University, and both D.D.S. and M.D. degrees from Stony Brook University.  He completed his residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery from North Shore-LIJ Medical Center.Learning Objectives:As oral health care providers, we frequently encounter clinical findings that are a result of underlying systemic disease.  Sometimes we are aware of the patient’s systemic disease and should be able to recognize the association.  While other times we will have a clinical finding that will lead to the diagnosis of a previously undiagnosed systemic illness. This lecture will review several of these clinical presentations across multiple organ systems.
Course TitlePeriodontal Surgical Procedures to Enhance Esthetic Restorative TreatmentDr. Constatine PavalakosIntroduction:Dr. Constatine Pavalakos graduated from NYU College of Dentistry in 1989 with a DDS and received his certificated in Periodontics in 1992, he became a diplomate of American Board of Periodontics in 1998. Since 1997 he is a faculty at NYU Lutheran Medical Center where he enjoys teaching undergrad and post grad students. He is a member of organized dentistry for over 20 years and has served on boards and committees of various dental organizations. He is past president of Second District Dental Society and North-East Society of Periodontists. He serves on NYSDA Council on Ethics and Jurisprudence and on the committee for GNYDM. He is the Brooklyn Director of NY Dental Forum. As a board-certified Periodontist.Learning Objectives:The course will focus on how periodontal surgical procedures such as sub epithelial connective tissue grafts, aesthetic crown lengthening, ridge augmentation, and immediate implants can enhance aesthetic restoration. Upon successful completion of this lecture, attendees will understand the concepts of gingival harmony and the ability to visualize discrepancies. Be able to diagnose, treatment plan, and execute aesthetic based periodontal surgical procedures. Learn to identify fundamental restorative and surgical principles. Course TitleSimplified Occlusal Evaluation and DiagnosisDr. Marc GainorIntroduction:Dr. Marc Gainor has been in the private practice of dentistry for 39 years. He graduated with a BA in Biology from the U Penn in 1977 and received his DMD degree from the U Penn School of Dental Medicine in 1981. He then completed a post graduate GPR in Dentistry in 1982. In 2006 Dr. Gainor was awarded the title of “Master” of the Academy of General Dentistry and was also recently awarded with the Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition Award for his continuing education achievements and service to organized dentistry. Dr. Gainor has completed the Pankey Institute restorative continuum, the Spear Institute mastery continuum and has taken advanced coursework at the Dawson Academy. Dr. Gainor has taught courses locally and nationally He is currently Visiting Faculty at the Spear Institute in Scottsdale Arizona, and has held appointments as Clinical Instructor at both the University of Pennsylvania and NYUCD.Learning Objectives:Review the key elements of occlusion, muscle and TMJ anatomy (as per the Pankey-Dawson occlusal philosophy). Review the key elements of a complete occlusal, muscle and joint exam, and what positive findings mean. Explain why Centric Relation is important, when to use it, and when it is safe to use the existing occlusion. Explain the Leaf Gauge and Lucia Jig – how to use them to safely load test the TMJ, deprogram muscles and take consistently accurate Centric Relation bite records. From 1986 to the present, Amy has been a member of the law firm, Jacobson Goldberg & Kulb LLP. She represents and defends dentists in OPD matters and all regulatory, law enforcement and audit matters.Dr. Rekha C. Gehani is an Orthodontist in private practice. She is Past Chair of the ADA Council of Dental Education and Licensure, past Chair and an extended member of NY State Board of dentistry. She evaluates and adjudicates the OPD complaints against Dentists.This combined presentation will provide dentists with an overview of current issues in OPD investigations and prosecutions and help them learn preventive strategies in daily practice.
