Course Title:  Pemphigus and Pemphigoid— The Unique Role of the Dental Professional

Presenter: Dr. David A. Sirois & Rebecca Strong, R.N., B.S.N.

Course Date: September 29, 2018 (Sunday)

Course Time: 11:15 AM – 1:00 PM EST

Course Description:

Pemphigus and pemphigoid are potentially life threatening autoimmune blistering diseases affecting the skin and/or mucous membranes. Despite their rare disease status, every dental professional should immediately recognize these disorders so effective treatment can begin as quickly as possible.  Are you prepared to recognize them?  Join us for a special combined presentation with both a patient and a scientific presenter.  Witness the emotional diagnosis journey of a pemphigus vulgaris patient. This deeply moving and educational presentation shines a light on the unfortunately common delay in diagnosis – and resulting prolonged suffering – the average pemphigus and pemphigoid patient experiences. For Becky Strong, this included 17 months, 5 physicians, multiple encounters with her dentist, and several rounds of incorrect treatments.  Fortunately, dental professionals are in the unique position to reduce these diagnostic delays. Learn from an expert, as Dr. David Sirois discusses clinical presentation, management and biopsy techniques for pemphigus and pemphigoid.  Don’t miss the opportunity to render early diagnoses for your patients. Put pemphigus and pemphigoid on your radar today!

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will:

  1. Know the key questions to ask when determining whether a patient might have pemphigus vulgaris (PV) or mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP).
  2. Understand dental management techniques for PV and MMP patients.
  3. Realize the dental professional’s unique role in reducing PV/MMP diagnostic delays.
  4. Understand appropriate biopsy techniques and referral patterns when PV/MMP is suspected.

Course Title:  Preventing Oropharyngeal Cancer with the HPV Vaccine: The Dentist’s Role

Presenter: Dr. Kristin Oliver

Course Date: September 29, 2018 (Saturday)

Course Time: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST

Course Description:

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 150 related viruses, some of which have oncogenic potential. HPV has been associated with cervical, vaginal, vulvar, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. In the United States, rates of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers increased by 225% over the past 30 years. There are now more HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers diagnosed every year than cervical cancers. Fortunately, the HPV vaccine provides protection against the HPV types linked to the vast majority of these cancers. This session will cover the current epidemiology of HPV related cancers, the link between HPV and oropharyngeal cancer, and HPV vaccine basics with an emphasis on HPV vaccine safety and effectiveness. We will then discuss current uptake of the HPV vaccine in the United States and the specific role that dentists can play to increase HPV vaccination and prevent HPV-associated cancers.

Course Date: September 29, 2018(Saturday)

Course Time: 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM EST

Course Description:

Advancements in delivering periapical surgery have resulted in success rates that can be equivalent to implant replacement when certain guidelines are adhered to. Periapical surgery as an adjunct to endodontic treatment is a proven approach. With the introduction of new surgical techniques and a systematic method to the diagnosis and treatment of compromised teeth, the clinician should be able to more accurately determine the long term prognosis for these treatment options.  Evaluate treatment options with an evidence-based approach. This course will describe the indications and contraindications for performing or referring a patient for apical surgery. With a specific 7 step workup, including a correct history, radiographic and clinical evaluation, the decision to perform an apicoectomy will be weighed against further evaluation, a re-treatment option, or extraction and replacement with an implant (immediate or delayed).  Emphasis will be given to the use of Surgical Guides for treatment planning as it relates to the diagnostic workup and the use of Computer Guided Surgery. Multiple provisional options will be reviewed to attain ideal esthetic results. Long term follow-up will be shown as it relates to these approaches. Long term follow-up will be shown as it relates to these approaches. The latest advances will also be reviewed with cases and follow up.

  • Recognize how the location of a sinus tract can be a key critical diagnostic indicator for the final prognosis
  • Identify the signs to differentiate between an Endo/Perio vs. Perio/Endo lesions and understand the difference as it relates to the final prognosis
  • Explore the use of platform switching and when and where to use it
  • Identify the “Top 10” rules for a successful esthetic outcome
