Course Description:

Injection therapies are widely used in pain medicine but not commonly used by general dentist because of lack of adequate training during dental school.  There is increasing evidence for injection therapies for TMD and several different type of injectable medications are being used. They can be used for muscle pain, neuropathic pain and for non-specific oral pain as well.  Injections into the Temporomandibular joints are more challenging, and we will discuss in brief the TMJ intra articular injections.  Injections can address muscle strains, muscle spasms, inflammation, trauma, and they can provide a dynamic neurosensory trickery to the region which can also stop a pain processing pathway (temporarily or permanently).  The evidence of injection therapies in bruxism is limited and will be discussed.  (3 hours will be split between 90 minutes of presentation and 90 minutes of hands-on muscle palpation and injection technique overview)

Learning Objectives:

– Screen for TMJ disorders, bruxism and other facial pain conditions.
– Learn evidence based selection of injectable; we will focus on Botulinum toxin, Local anesthetic and Triamcinolone
– When to refer and who to refer to
